And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Luke 18:18 This is the question that all of humanity wants to know-"Master-what must I do to be saved?" Now watch how Christ responds-by testing and searching the heart of the rich young ruler-- And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Mark 10:18 Jesus was searching him, to see if he understood truly who he was talking to, the Son of God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. Luke 18:20 Two points here-first, Christ was pointing to the Commandments that relate to our fellow man (The first 4 Commandments are about love for God, the last six about love for our neighbor). Second, that would lead into to the test Christ was about to give him. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Matthew 19:20 Christ saw that the young man was sincere. Christ yearned to touch his soul. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow Me. Mark 10:21 Christ gave him a test of his heart. Did his character truly bear the stamp of the Commandments he just claimed to have kept since his youth-The ones relating to his fellow man? And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. Mark 10:22 The love of this world was too great for him! He loved his riches more than his neighbor, and therefore more than God. As riches were his god, he was also violating the first Commandment. John 14:15
